CLUB  BAR  AND LAKE  HOTEL

This establishment is the first and last of the town of Medicine Lake.

The business was the first one relocated to the new townsite in 1909.   The business is the last remaining
structure to be continuously operated as when it was located in the old site of “Flandrem”
The first settler came to a location near the Jasper Bedford  Roadhouse in 1906.   Barney Allen was the
sixth settler there and opened a hotel and bar in 1908.   The second floor was later used as the
first schoolhouse.   The building was moved at the end of  1909,  maybe to be of  use to the railroad
crews that finished the spur line and siding in June, 1910.   In 1910 the railroad  real estate agent
recorded the sale of the new location to a  J. C. Wigmore whose family remained as the property owners
of record until 1943 When  it was sold to Walter N. Stephens (Bud) and his partner Charles Peters.

By 1912 the hotel and restaurant addition was added on to the West of the original building and operated
by one of the Allen sons.

Subsequent owners of the bar were Norman Buss in  1956  and Ed Wolski in  1965.  Don Greff
purchased the bar  in 1978, and  Danny Olson in 1980.    Danny added the lot next East of the Bar in
1984 and used it as a beer garden.   Current owner is Marilyn Smith, since 1993.  The hotel portion of
the building has been renovated and reopened.

The hotel portion of the building to the West was added  to the main structure by 1912.
It ‘s believed to have contained twelve sleeping rooms.  The old hotel floor directly above the bar was
eventually turned into an apartment for owners.   The hotel was  electrified in 1914.
Indoor plumbing was installed with a room converted to a bath “down-the-hall” and wash sinks added to
each room.

The hotel lobby  used in later years as a waiting room for the local transit service.  The stair-well was
eventually walled off and the remaining part of the lobby-office became part of the bar.  The restaurant
portion with its kitchen and laundry room were also eventually opened to the bar and utilized by its
patrons.
